Capital Candlelighters is a non-profit organization, serving families whose children have been diagnosed with cancer, primarily focused on those treated at the American Family Children’s Hospital.  Some of our programs include:

Providing information and assistance to the families of hospitalized children, including 'New Diagnosis Bags' with a parent binder, books on childhood cancer, toys, games and other distractions and comfort items during that first frightening hospitalization.

Offering educational materials on childhood cancer, back-to-school issues, coping with hair loss, nutrition, preparing for a bone marrow or stem cell transplant, dealing with grief and other essential topics our kids and families face, both in our hospital-based library in the AFCH 4th Floor Family Lounge and at our office on Segoe Road.

Sponsoring fun activities so kids and families can enjoy themselves and share informal support while they face the cancer battle.

Providing emergency funds to families of area children with cancer who need help with transportation and other basic living expenses.

Hosting a monthly Family Support Group, giving our parents a chance to dine together and share support while the kids play and meet one another in a fun, non-medical atmosphere.

Providing the AFCH Peds Heme Onc Hero Beads program, a way to honor the daily courage of children and teens who are fighting cancer.  Patients collect beads symbolizing each treatment experience and personal milestone, stringing them into a unique, touchable record of their cancer journey.

Giving prepaid gas cards and phone cards to families who must travel long distances for a child's treatments

Helping make connections between families of children with similar diagnoses so that they can share information, practical tips and support.

Supplying the "Ashley's Med Box" program, providing a portable, lockable medication organization system to kids and teens with cancer to help keep track of medications, medication charts and other needed supplies.  Started and initially funded by a teen survivor who wanted to help other kids and their families!

Supporting parent/staff initiatives to improve services for children and families at the American Family Children's Hospital.

We are an affiliate of Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Foundation, a national organization based in Maryland.
